Limit states for large span culverts

IDM 28/7/05

Culvert across Kettle Creek, Elgin County, following rehabilitation to improve buckling strength in 1988.

Metal culverts can collapse following elastic buckling or as a result of bending moments that produce plastic response. Project 12-45 conducted with McGrath, Selig and Taleb through the National Collaborative Highway Research Program examined flexural limit states and produced revised buckling, thrust and bending moment calculation procedures for the Bridge Design Code of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
