Pascale Champagne: Research

Waste Stabilization Ponds- Loyalist Township

Projects Established at Queen's University

A collaborative project was initiated with the Amherstview Wastewater Treatment Facility in Loyalist Township in 2011 with Dr. Geof Hall. This NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) funded project aims to advance the basic understanding of biological and chemical processes occurring within passive waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) and shed new light on the mechanisms combining to create the conditions conducive for algae and pH increases, while at the same time providing the evidence-base to guide effective planning and implementation of constructed, low-cost wetlands to successfully attenuate these conditions. The project has not evolved to investigate the role of algae in wastewater treatment and disinfection with industrial and NSERC funding extended to 2018.
